LASIK Surgery has Reached New Heights of Success

Much like your phone has seen a progression in technology over the past twenty years, so too has LASIK surgery reached new heights of success. Rest assured, we use the most advanced technology and lasers – so precise it can etch sentences on a single strand of human hair. However, all this technology is of no use unless there is a highly skilled and experienced surgeon like Dr. Brusco analyzing, programming, and guiding the technology.

LASIK EYE SURGERY IN WASHINGTON DC

What is LASIK?

LASIK is an acronym that stands for laser-assisted-in-situ-keratomileusis, and was FDA approved in 1999, revolutionizing the ophthalmology field. Over 40 million LASIK procedures have been performed worldwide since its inception over 25 years ago, with a patient satisfaction rate of around 99 percent. It is a highly precise technique that delivers exceptional outcomes and a rapid visual recovery, making it the most common laser vision correction procedure performed…for good reason! Before LASIK, a corrective lens worn on or in front of the eye was the only way optometry had to treat myopia, hyeropia, and astigmatism. LASIK has brought freedom to millions of people from contact lenses and glasses.

In short, it is one of the most successful surgical treatments of any kind in the world. Make no mistake, LASIK is a time-tested procedure with proven results that has evolved over the years to make it safer and more effective than ever.

Since FDA approval 25 years ago, there has been a progression of technological improvements leading to better outcomes and LVC is now one of the safest surgical procedures.

How Does it Work?

LASIK involves microscopically reshaping the cornea, with the use of a cool-beam excimer laser. LASIK effectively treats nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism (an irregular shape of the eye). In the early days, LASIK utilized a mechanically powered metal blade called a microkeratome. It was a useful procedure that was safe and helped a lot of people, but it was not quite as repeatable as many ophthalmologists would have preferred. Then SBK LASIK was developed.

What is SBK LASIK?

Sub-Bowman keratomileusis (SBK LASIK) – or “bladeless LASIK” – is the most modern and advanced form of this life-changing laser eye surgery, and we are pleased to offer SBK LASIK at Brusco Vision. SBK LASIK utilizes a femtosecond laser. This laser is ultrafast and treats at a unit of measurement that is incredibly precise. A femtosecond is a millionth of a billionth of a second.

To put this into perspective: one femtosecond is to one second as one second is to about 32 million years. Incredibly short-duration and accurate! With this laser, not only do many patients have even better vision afterward, but their results are more predictable. Eye surgeons use your own customized corneal topography map to plan your treatment. What’s more, many patients who were once not considered LASIK candidates have now been able to enjoy the visual freedom that SBK LASIK provides.

Over the past 15 years, he has helped tens of thousands of patients just like you finally say goodbye to their glasses and contact lenses in order to lead more independent and active lives. He has successfully performed surgery on professional athletes, teachers, military pilots, commercial airline pilots, engineers, optometrists, ophthalmologists – and everyone in between – to cure their blurry view of the world, regain autonomy, and take control of their vision.

Better Safety

Did you know that laser vision correction is safer than wearing contacts? Over the long term, you’re 5x more likely to develop a serious eye infection from wearing contact lenses than from the one-time experience of LASIK. Reasons to Have SBK LASIK at Brusco Vision

Who is a Candidate For SBK LASIK?

SBK LASIK at Brusco Vision in Washington DC and the DMV is an excellent solution for someone who is at least 18 years of age with a stable refraction and is ready to eliminate their dependency on corrective lenses.

Nearsighted, Farsighted, or Astigmatism

If you are nearsighted, farsighted, or have astigmatism, you can be cured of any of these vision conditions in minutes with SBK LASIK. In fact, SBK LASIK corrects myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism better than glasses and contact lenses by correcting it at the source – right on the cornea. The change you notice is immediate and, in most cases, will provide you with better vision than even glasses or contact lenses.

Great for Patients Who Wear Glasses or Contact Lenses

SBK LASIK is a possibility for about 80-85% of patients who wear glasses or contact lenses. However, at Brusco Vision we have found that about 40% of these patients are better suited and achieve more accurate results with one of our five other modern LASIK procedures. Factors that can affect your candidacy are the degree of the refractive error as well as the thickness and shape of the cornea. During your initial consultation, you will experience thorough diagnostic testing while meeting with Dr. Brusco to determine if this procedure is best suited for you. We are dedicated to helping all of our patients achieve visual freedom through vision correction surgery.

More FAQs about LASIK Washington DC and the DMV

Yes, overwhelmingly so. LASIK, along with its five other minimally invasive modern variations, is arguably the most studied and analyzed procedure in modern medical history. Those exceptional results all point in the same direction – vision correction is safe, effective, and long-lasting. Don’t just take our word for it, however. The US military has also fully adopted LASIK. When push comes to shove, our armed forces, which has a vast repository of LASIK data, understand that eyeglasses or contacts are ultimately a hindrance among its many servicemen and women.

There has not been a single reported incident of blindness occurring from LASIK.

Absolutely. One of the most common misconceptions we hear from patients is that LASIK can’t treat astigmatism. Not only is that untrue, but it generally treats astigmatism better than glasses or contacts can.

No, the changes with LASIK are permanent. However, around age 45, most people begin to have difficulty seeing up close (presbyopia). This occurs whether they’ve had LASIK or not. If you are close to this age, we’ll take that into consideration in determining your best vision correction options.

No. You will not feel any pain or discomfort during your procedure. However, you will experience a bit of a light show during the process.

The procedure takes about 10 minutes to complete for both eyes, but the laser portion is only seconds per eye. Most patients are surprised by how quick the process really is.

The lasers used at Brusco Vision are equipped with features to limit eye movements or monitor the position of your eye, making necessary adjustments for any position changes during the treatment process. Even if you coughed, for example, our excimer laser would automatically stop and later resume exactly where it left off. In addition, a gentle eyelid holder is placed between your eyelids, so you don’t have to worry about blinking during the procedure.

No, it doesn’t. However, LASIK is a Health Savings Account or Flexible Spending Account procedure. If your company offers a health or flexible spending account, you can generally use it to pay for LASIK.

One of the greatest benefits of LASIK is its rapid visual recovery. Although vision tends to be blurry the first few hours after the procedure, most of our LASIK patients are back to work and resume normal activities the very next day. The vision continues to clear and improve even more over the next week of LASIK recovery.

Many people naturally have 20/15 eyesight. Additionally, corrective procedures like LASIK can help you achieve 20/15 vision. However, LASIK and comparable operations do not aim to provide 20/15 visual acuity. In actuality, achieving 20/15 vision correction may cause headaches, eyestrain, or blurred visual perception. Normal goals of corrective surgery are to achieve 20/20 vision, not 20/15.

Some corneal nerves are cut during LASIK, which somewhat lessens corneal sensitivity. Your body produces less tears as a result of your eye not sensing the need for lubrication and dry eye syndrome can develop.

Many eye doctors now advise using lubricating eye drops or other treatments to keep your eyes moist. Even if you don’t show any symptoms of dry eyes, you could be offered treatments to enhance eye lubrication before having laser surgery as a precaution.

One of the many LASIK alternatives that does not involve making a tiny flap on the surface of the eye, such as photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), may be recommended by your physician instead of LASIK in some circumstances where dry eyes are a particular concern.
